Zion Park
“Zion’s Park,” 36 x 48,” oil on canvas, 1997. $700.
I painted and altered a photo from this gorgeous park in Utah. This the final painting in my first oil painting class at the University of Houston with Darryl Lauster. He was an eloquent professor. I remember an installation he did where he and his wife has displayed hundreds of eggs that they painstakingly pin-holed and blew out to leave a hollow shell. Its takes some really smooth talking to get a bunch of people interested in looking at a white box full of eggs.
This canyon had an ominous height, and such great beauty that I felt like there was a presence there, hence the face in the shadows. The small figure in the stream takes a moment to feel it, too, but doesn’t see the enormous figure in the shadows.
